I am pleased with the decision of the United States Supreme Court today in McDonald v City of Chicago. In this landmark case, the Court, in a 5-4 decision, ruled that the Second Amendment right “applies equally to the federal government and the states.”

The decision by the Supreme Court makes it clear that the Second Amendment, as every citizen’s constitutional right, is now a real part of American constitutional law. It makes no sense that some amendments would be treated differently than others. The 2nd amendment is just as important as the 1st or the 14th.

I am especially pleased that the Court makes it absolutely clear that the Second Amendment protects the right of gun ownership for all law-abiding Americans. It is ironic that despite the passage of the gun ban law by the City of Chicago, crime there has continued to run rampant and lawmakers there have asked the National Guard for help.

The Supreme Court has taken a huge step in ensuring that the Second Amendment applies to all law-abiding citizens equally and ensures that no law shall infringe on the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
